SINGAPORE  1

The legendary Raffles Hotel in Singapore
(Pho

(Named for Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, and declared a national monument in 1987,
it was originally a seaside hotel, but due to continuing reclamation, now stands some 500 yards inland.
The "Singapore Sling" was invented in its famous Long Bar, but it, too, has been moved, from the lobby
to the nearby new shopping arcade. "The Grand Lady of the East" remains the city's beloved icon.)

The Marina Bay Sands Hotel Towers in Singapore
(Pho
to © Fred R. Krug )

(The 55 story, 2,561 room resort complex, which cost 5.7 billion US dollars+ (including the land) to build, opened
in 2010 and is owned by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. It contains a major convention center, an indoor ice
skating rink, shopping malls, half a dozen Celebrity Chef Restaurants, two large theaters and a casino. Spanning
the three towers at a height of over 650 feet is the spectacular boat shaped Sky Park, which features, among other
things, panoramic views, the "Sky on 57" Restaurant and a nearly 500 feet long, positively unbelievable Infinity Pool.)
